June 12 – Coming Out Later In Life.
With gay marriage legal in the United States, and attitudes changing, more gay people feel safe about coming out. Sometimes it takes a long time to come to terms with one’s sexuality, especially those from the baby boomer generation. These generations grew up in a time of don’t ask, don’t tell, they hid in underground clubs and faced morals charges and jail time just for frequently a club considered to be “gay”. They painfully lived dual lives to a greater extent than the younger generations could ever imagine.
It’s not really surprising that many of the older generations waited till later in life to come out. And then once they did come out, they still face challenges as the navigate their new lives.
May – Don’t Call Me A Senior. This subject is about the difficulty many of us have in acknowledging our advancement into older adulthood. What are the emotions we have about accepting this reality? Why do we avoid it? What are some ways we can make this transition better?
These talks will be in the form of group discussions. Conversations are led by GenPRIDE volunteers with an emphasis on the impact to our lives.
